Do I need a visa to travel to Tanzania?

Yes, if you are arriving at Kilimanjaro International Airport you do have the option of applying for your visa in person, however, we would strongly recommend applying for your visa prior to departing your country of origin.

Should I take out travel insurance before my trip to Tanzania?

Yes, we strongly recommend you have adequate travel insurance before departing your country of origin. Please keep in mind you will be required to provide evidence that you are fully insured above 6,000m before your mountain climb.

What medical precautions do I need to take before traveling to Tanzania?

We strongly recommend you visit your doctor to ensure that you have received all necessary vaccinations and supplied with the correct malaria medication. Please note if you are visiting a yellow fever zone you will be required to show your yellow fever card upon arrival.

How much should I tip?

During a mountain climb it is custom to minimally tip as follows:

• Guides = $20 per day;

• Chef = $15 per day; and 

• Porters = $10 per day

During a safari or any other activity is it custom to tip $10 per guide per person. 

There is no expectation to tip at restaurants, cafes, taxi services, or accommodation unless you feel the service warrants it.

Can I use my credit card in Tanzania?

Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted in most restaurants, shops, and hotels within the larger cities of Tanzania such as Dar Es Salam, Arusha, Moshi & Zanzibar, however, it is good practice to carry some cash. Diners Club and American Express may not be accepted. Proof of identification may be required when paying by credit card, so be sure to carry some form of photo identification at all times.

How much luggage can I take on a safari or mountain climb?

During your activity, you will be able to bring 15kg (33lb.) per person of luggage. Some hotels and lodges will hold any additional luggage you may have in a locked storage room if necessary. Please check with your accommodation prior to departure as each accommodation varies. 

Is tap water safe to drink in Tanzania?

No, please ensure you are drinking bottled water. 

What if I have dietary requirements?

Most accommodation and restaurants cater to special dietary requirements. For travelers attending a safari or climbing the mountain please advise Omura of your dietary requirements and we will ensure that your chefs provide a suitable menu for you. 

Will I be able to access an ATM in Tanzania?

Yes, ATMs are found throughout major city centers and shopping complexes.

What adaptors do I need to bring and what is the electricity voltage?

Tanzania uses the three-pronged British plug. The electricity voltage is 230V so please confirm if you require a voltage converter before plugging in any devices. 

What clothes should I pack when traveling to Tanzania?

The most practical items to pack for a Tanzanian safari are light cotton tops and cotton trousers or shorts in khaki, brown, white, and beige. Due to the high altitude on the rim of Tanzania’s Ngorongoro Crater, night time temperatures are cold even in summer. Travelers to these regions should pack a fleece or sweater, as well as a warm jacket for game drives.

Swimwear is a must when travelling to the coastal areas. Comfortable walking shoes are essential for those planning bush walks or walking safaris.

Guests intending to climb Mount Kilimanjaro should pack thermal underwear, light layers, a fleece jumper, rain gear, snow gear, good socks and sturdy hiking boots. Please view our suggested packing list on our Mount Kilimanjaro page. 

Is Tanzania a good destination for traveling with children?

Yes, Tanzania welcomes all age groups. Many of Omura's packages are suitable for children, however please note that there are age resticitions for some safari game drives. Omura will ensure that all safari packages are customised to best suit your families needs. 

Will I be able to access the internet?

Yes, most accommodations provide free wifi, however, this may vary based on accommodation and location. 

Is it ok to take photos in Tanzania?

As always, it is courteous to be sensitive and ask permission before photographing people. In most African countries (Tanzania included) it is illegal to take photos of airports and military installations.

Tanzania offers exceptional bird watching in diverse destinations, boasting not only an excellent array of indigenous species but a large number of migrants. 

Is Tanzania a safe country to visit?

Yes, Tanzanians are well known for their warm hospitality towards visitors. As with any travel, it is a good idea to take standard precautions. Keep your passport and valuables close at hand or safely locked away and don’t leave luggage unattended. Omura will be happy to provide a guide for the day if necessary.
